Advice, comments very welcome! Thank you. I check fluids often and I still have the temp gauge so I’m not too worried, but I hate to kludge things. Place the funnel in the mouth of the coolant expansion tank, and start to slowly add coolant. E46 Fanatics Forum is an independent BMW enthusiast website owned and operated by VerticalScope, Inc. Place towels under the car under the expansion tank. Turn on heater, set to highest temp and lowest fan speed. Hopefully someone can shed some light, else I will just make the jumper wire permanent and avoid this headache. 2) Turn ignition to ON (dash lights on but do NOT start the car) 3) Set heat to MAXIMUM (90) and fan speed to low (this opens heater valve) 4) Begin to fill your expansion tank with ideally a 50/50 mix of Genuine BMW coolant and distilled water (do not use anything else-no reason to. Turn ignition to position 2, do not start engine. ![]() How on earth did the system get so jacked from just a simple tank and sensor replacement and why can’t I clear this message via some standard procedure? I have the opposite – when a magnet is near, the switch closes and the system is happy – message goes away. In other words, normally as the float dropped due to a coolant loss, the magnet would come down to the vicinity of the sensor the switch would close and the message would appear. Inserted jumper wire into harness socket: message went away.īased on this, somehow my system seems to be in a mode where it is operating backward. Removed sensor from harness: message remained.Ĥ. fill expansion tank with 50/50 mix of diluted water and BMW coolant until the plastic rod tops out (NOT TO THE NECK) Replace radiator cap. Condition #1 above, then put a magnet on the sensor: message went away.ģ. Turn on heat to max (91 degrees and full fan) Wait until thermostat opens. Pulled the sensor out of the well but still attached to the harness: message remained.Ģ. As I dont have an ice scraper I left the car running with the defroster on full and the heat at 80 degrees for about 10 minutes before my Starbucks run. Do not mess around with your cooling system. ![]() Joined 2006 Add to quote Share Only show this user 5.This was the first time I had actually powered up the heater to full since owning the car. The coolant temperature warning light turns on when your engine is sensed to be too hot and is at risk of damage from overheating. The light would go on because your heater core opens up when you use the heat so coolant is being directed towards that triggering the low coolant light. ![]() Update – here’s the troubleshooting steps I did:ġ. After the first frost, on my drive down to Starbucks the low coolant warning light came on.
